The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer

Grades 9-12
the-dead

This is the second book in the Last Survivors series. The story follows Alex, who is left to fend for himself and his sisters after an asteroid hits the moon and leaves New York in a devastating condition. Alex’s father is in Puerto Rico and he hasn’t seen his mother since she left for work days ago. He wonders if his parents are even still alive. Alex is only 17 years old, but like it or not, he’s the man of the house now. He takes care of his sisters Bri, who is 15 and Julie who is 12 by making sure they have what they need to survive. He confides in the priests of his Catholic school, and relies on the lunch the school provides for him and his sisters. Though prospects are grim, Alex perseveres and does the best he can to provide for his family.
